Jawless Fishes • Examples: Lampreys & Hagfishes • Characteristics: • No jaws or scales • Instead of jaws, they have structures for scraping, stabbing, and sucking their food • Their skeleton is made up of cartilage • THINK! – Which is more flexible: bone or cartilage? • Cartilage

Bony Fishes Bluefish • Examples: Trout, tuna, goldfish, clownfish, balloonfish • Characteristics: • Makes up 95% of all fishes. Take a look at the fish you can catch in NJ pictured to the right. • Has jaws, scales, and gills on each side • Has a skeleton made of hard bone • Has an organ called a swim bladder • THINK! – What does this organ do for the fish? • A Gas filled sac that helps the fish stay stable at different water depths (acts like a life vest).
