  5. Nutrition Statistics

  6. What happens when you are malnourished • Most U.S. adults don’t meet their recommended daily levels of 10 essential nutrients. • Many American adults fell short of consuming enough vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and iron. • Americans have a tendency to eat far more saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium than is normal or recommended. • Lacking proper nutrients can lead to severe deficiencies like iron deficiencies, which can end up as anemia • Lack of the vitamin D could lead to osteoporosis and has been linked to plenty of other issues, like muscle weakness, reduced stamina, chronic pain, and depression

  7. What else could happen when you are malnourished • Immune Implications • Growth Implications • Cognitive Implications

  8. Deficiencies in iron, magnesium and zinc can cause anorexia and thereby result in reduced intake of other important nutrients such as protein. Low lipid intake can also affect the absorption of important fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and D. Zinc and protein deficiencies can retard bone growth and development, putting a child at risk for long-term complications.

  9. Exercise Statistics • Only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity (30 mins.) each week • More than 80% of adults and children do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities • Children now spend more than 7.5 hrs a day in front of a screen • Nearly one-third of high school students play video or computer games for 3 or more hours on an average school day.

  10. What happens when you don’t get enough exercise? • Flexibility Issues • Heart Issues • Muscular Problems • Weight Issues • Stress Issues • Sex Issues • Bone Issues • Mood Issues

  11. Stress Statistics • Four out of ten college students report they feel stressed often • One out of five say they feel stressed most of the time • One out of four students report experiencing daily stress • One in ten report thoughts of suicide • More than half of students (60%) reported that severe stress interfered with their ability to complete their schoolwork more often than once, and that this statistic reflects an increase from 2008. • The Spring 2013 edition of the National College Health Assessment, where the average age of those survey was 21 years, reported that almost half (46.3%) of all undergraduate students surveyed felt trauma or overwhelmed in regard to their academic responsibilities. Almost half of students surveyed reported they have more than average or extreme stress.
