  1. Computer Applications Sec 1 Normal Technical E-Learning

  2. Objectives • State that a computer has characteristics of the von-Neumann machine • State the characteristics of household devices that are controlled by embedded processors

  3. Introduction • Computers are found in many areas of our life. The type of computer that most people are familiar with is the desktop computer. A typical desktop computer

  4. Introduction • Not all computers are shaped like a desktop computer. In fact, some computers do not look like desktop computers at all. A panel computer

  5. 1.1 Household Appliances that are Computers Characteristics of a Computer

  6. Memory : Stores the amount of time needed for each type of wash Input : Type of wash required e.g. spin, soak, rinse Processing : Controls how much water to use. Controls the movement of the washing drum Output : Beeping sound when wash is complete 1.1 Household Appliances that are Computers Characteristics of a Computer Consider the typical washing machine:

  7. 1.1 Household Appliances that are Computers Characteristics of a Computer Consider the typical washing machine: • It can be classified as a very simple computer. • The washing machine runs • only 1 program. It cannot be • installed with other new • programs.

  8. 1.1 Household Appliances that are Computers • Household appliances that come with embedded processors can be considered to be very simple computers because the processors have the 4 characteristics of the von-Neumann machine.

  9. 1.1 Household Appliances that are Computers Common Household Appliances that Have Embedded Processors Microwave Oven LCD Television Oven for making bread

  10. Please copy down the questions and answer the questions on a piece of foolscap paper.

  11. 1.2 A Toy that Has an Embedded Processor When your equipment needs batteries or electricity to run, it probably has an embedded processor.

  12. 1.2 A Toy that Has an Embedded Processor Electronic Component - Description Resistor - The little cylinder with many coloured strips, which controls electric current flow. Capacitor - The component that is coloured orange or green. It stores electricity. Transistor - The black little plastic block. This amplifies electric current. Processor - The long piece of black plastic with many legs. This controls the motion of the car.

  13. Please copy down the questions and answer the questions on a piece of foolscap paper.

  14. 1.3 Factors Affecting the use of Embedded Processors A complex processor • Cost • 2. Complexity • 3. Power efficiency • 4. Knowledge • 5. Imagination The Human Transporter

  15. Summary • A computer is any device that has the ability to input, output, process and store data or information. • Many household appliances are operated by embedded processors. These are special-purpose computers because they cannot be used for other jobs. Embedded processors help automate dull repetitive tasks.

  16. Summary • Embedded processors are more widely-used now. • A few embedded processors can be found in household appliances. • Exploring the internal components of household appliances can be dangerous because there are components that store electricity. • High cost, complexity, high power consumption rate and limited knowledge are factors that used to limit the use of embedded processors.

  17. Hope that you’ve learned more about the uses of computers in household appliances. Now, it’s time for you to do more work for your E-Learning.  Please complete the Activities in your Workbook from Page 24 to 27 and submit the completed work on the first lesson after you come back from E-Learning days. Hope you've enjoyed the lesson!!! Acknowledgement: PEARSON LONGMAN, Teacher’s Resource File, Jonathan Chan Lesson compiled & edited by: Mr Duncan Hiew / Mathematics Department
