MAXIMIZINGGRAMMAR SCOREFOR SMA STUDENTS BY NIKMAH NURBAITY Baity1968@yahoo.com
Grammar?????Some wrong opinions • It is a set of rules to remember • Meaning is not important at all • It is just formula • It is the most difficult part of English • It is not important in speaking
Some facts and questions about grammar teaching • Does grammar contribute a lot to the students score? • Is it the most favorite part most teachers like doing in the class? • Is it the only test given to the students? • Is it the easy and accurate measurement to measure students competence?
Teaching Grammar? Start with interesting activity • Give meaningful understanding in explaining • Emphasize the use and form • Give special characteristic ( clue ) of using the target grammar • Give more examples ( in CTL ) • Let the students experience constructing their own sentences using the target grammar
Give more chances to experience the productive skill ( joint and independent construction ) • Give the real examples of various kinds of test directly after finishing one target • Give more chances to try the various kinds of test ( daily, midterm, semester, national exam, UMPTN, TOEIC, TOEFL ) • Let the students experience doing the various levels of difficulty
Grammar to be mastered in SMA • 1.Tenses • 2.Passive • 3.Conditional sentences • 4.Reported speech • 5.Subjunctive • 6.Causative • 7. Modal

Grammar in SKL 2006 • 1. present perfect continuous tense • 2. future perfect tense • 3. passive • 4. causative have and get • 5. subjunctive • 6. should have verb III
Some difficulties faced by students: • To differenciate active and passive in various tenses , for example : • Is discussing has been discussed • Is discussed has been discussing • Has discussed had discussed • Is being discussed will have discussed • Was discussed was being discussed • Will be discussing had been discussing • Will be discussed had been discussed • Discusses discussed • Will discussed
Note for students: to be verb ing : me to be verb III : di master the time signals Other problems with have in causative Have to repair it had repaired it Had to repair it have been repaired Have it repaired have a lot of things
Subjunctive and conditional • School exercises : find the facts • National exam : find the meaning students are trapped in grammar rules ,do not realize the meaning
Conjunction : it is difficult for students to see the relation between the main clause and the subordinate clause cant get the whole understanding of the sentence for example : ……his father objection, the boy left for Jakarta to get a job.
Common errors : - students cant identify what is actually tested . - students can not recognize the clue for example : Finally he succedded in …….his uncle address.
And there are still a lot of common errors that the students make. • It is the teachers challenge to know what are those common errors then how to help the students to overcome . thank you……………………
