  7. International Fire Code 903 • International Fire Code-Section 903 Automatic Sprinkler Systems • *OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATION*. For the purposes of this code, certain occupancies are defined as follows: [B] Assembly Group A. Assembly Group Aoccupancy includes, among others, the use of a building or structure, ora portion thereof, for the gathering together of persons for purposes suchas civic, social or religious functions, recreation, food or drinkconsumption or awaiting transportation. A room or space used for assemblypurposes by less than 50 persons and accessory to another occupancy shallbe included as a part of that occupancy. Assembly areas with less than 750square feet (69.7 m2) and which are accessory toanother occupancy according to Section 302.2.1 of theInternational Building Code are not assembly occupancies. Assemblyoccupancies which are accessory to Group E in accordance with Section 302.2of the International Building Code are not considered assembly occupancies.Religious educational rooms and religious auditoriums which areaccessory to churches in accordance with Section 302.2 of the InternationalBuilding Code and which have occupant loads of less than 100 shall beclassified as A-3. A building or tenant space used for assembly purposes byless than 50 persons shall be considered a Group B occupancy.

Code 903, Continued • *A-3 Assembly* uses intended for worship, recreation or amusement and other assembly uses not classified elsewhere in Group A, including, but notlimited to: Amusement arcades, Art galleries, Bowlingalleys, Churches, Community halls, Bowling alleys • 903.2.1.3 Group A-3. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided for Group A-3 occupancies where one of the following conditions exists: • 1. The fire area exceeds 12,000 square feet (111 m2); • 2. The fire area has an occupant load of 300 or more; or • 3. The fire area is located on a floor other than the level of exit discharge • *National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code 901 is the basis for all fire codes.

Standard Industrial Classification Code (SIC Code) • 8661 Religious Organizations Establishments of religious organizations operated for worship, religious training or study, government or administration of an organized religion, or for promotion of religious activities. Other establishments maintained by religious organizations, such as educational institutions, hospitals, publishing houses, reading rooms, social services, and secondhand stores, are classified according to their primary activity. Also included in this industry are religious groups which reach the public through radio or television media. Establishments of such religious groups which produce taped religious programming for television are classified in Industry 7812, and those which produce live religious programs are classified in Industry 7922. Establishments of such groups which operate radio or television stations are classified in Communications, Major Group 48.
