What is the Internet? • The worlds largest computer network. A collection of local, regional and national computer networks linked together to exchange data and distribute processing tasks.
What is a “Network? • Two or more computers that are connected.
What is a LAN? • Local Area Network. The computers are near each other.
What is a WAN? • Wide Area Network. The computers are different geographical sites.
What does WWW stand for? • World Wide Web
How is information sent over the Internet? • In Packets, downloading a section at a time.
What is a modem? • A MO-dulator DE-Modulator. A device that lets a personal computer communicate with other computers over telephone lines.
What kind of information is Digital info? • Electronic signals from an electronic device.
What kind of information is Analog info? • Sound waves from a telephone device.
What is the Title Bar? • Shows the title of the open Web Page and the Web Browsers program name.
What is the Toolbar? • Shows the icons for moving around the Web Page.
What is an Icon? • Small picture of the menu item you are choosing.
What is the Address Bar? • URL – Shows the address for the site you are accessing. Where you type the address.
What is a URL? • Uniform Resource Locator. Four part addressing scheme: • http://www.bso.org/tangle/perfs/index.html • Transfer protocol • Domain name • Pathname • Filename
What is the Refresh Button? • Try again if not working properly…temporarily out of order.
What is the Home Button? • Takes you back to the Web Page (…or Home Page) quickly.
Where is the Web page Area? • After the toolbars…where the info is.
What is the Status Bar? • At the bottom of the screen. It generally indicates the name of the Web Page that is loading, the load status and important messages, such as “Document Done.”
What is the Menu Bar? • Provides a convenient way for you to execute typical file, edit, view and help commands.
What are the Scroll Bars? • Lets you move the page vertically or horizontally.
How do you navigate the Internet? • With a browser which lets you view information on the WWW.
What is a Search Engine? • A program which acts like a library card catalog for the Internet. They locate and isolate desired information by searching for keywords that the user specifies. • Name some common Search Engines?
The term we use when exploring the Internet is SURFING • When speaking of the Internet of the future, we refer to it as the CYBERSPACE • Chatting with someone on the Internet is called CYBER CHAT • The type of mail sent over the Internet is called EMAIL • The part of the Internet that returns bounced mail is DAEMON, DEFINES THE PROBLEM

What is a Web Page? • A Home Page which outlines more info about a certain subject. What is a domain? • A way to indicate what type of site you may be viewing • In the U.S. some common domains are .com commercial, .org non-profit and research organizations, .gov government agency, .edu education. More are constantly being added so these should only be used as guidelines to help you know what type of site you are on.
What is the AUP? Acceptable Use Agreement • What is HTML? HypertextMarkup Language. The coding scheme used to format text for use on the WWW. • What is HTTP? Hypertext Transport Protocol. The transmission standard used to send on HTML document across the WWW.
