  7. African Americans Move North • African American population in North was double that of 1910 by 1930 • Strong communities existed in: • Chicago • Detroit • NYC (esp. Harlem) • Faced discrimination and bigotry

  9. Black Nationalism • Marcus Garvey = leader • Call for a “Back to Africa” movement • Black separation – economic/political and social

  10. The Return of the KKK • Result of intolerance • Similar to old Klan in the South • Midwest and North – targets =blacks, radicals, immigrants, Catholics and Jews • Height = 1925

  11. Immigration Restrictions • 140K in 1919 to 805 K in 1921 • 1921 National Origins Act – 3% of each nationality from 1910 – NO Asians – W. Hemisphere immigration NOT restricted

  12. Immigration Act of 1924 • Reduced quotas to 2% of the 1890 figures • Limited SE Europeans • Annual Quota for Asians – 100 each (China and Japan)

  13. Mexican American Migration • Employers in SW encouraged • 500K entered in 1920s • Poor work and living conditions • Settled in: Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, El Paso, San Antonio, etc
