  2. Disability Support • What counts as a disability? Come and find out about support available and who qualifies.

  3. Eligible conditions • Autism/Aspergers • Specific Learning Difficulties: dyslexia, dyspraxia, pragmatic semantic disorder • Unseen conditions - heart conditions, epilepsy, cancer, ME, CFS, MS etc • Sensory impairments • Mental health conditions • Mobility

  4. Equality Act 2010 definition • A physical or mental impairment which has substantial and long-term adverse effect on ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

  5. Personal Care - washing, dressing, eating, cooking, shopping Funded by your local Social Services

  6. Areas of study that might be affected • Taking notes in lectures and seminars or when researching • Concentration • Composition • Proof reading • Time management • Exams • Mobility • Communication and social interaction

  7. Role of Study Support Adviser • screening for dyslexia and arranging for dyslexia assessments with educational psychologist • assessing, supporting and monitoring support for disabled students • mentoring • helping with funding applications • writing summary of reasonable adjustments • organising individual exam arrangements

  10. Funding • Disabled Students Allowance funded by Student Finance England or NHS Bursaries (nursing/midwifery) • Note takers, facilitators, mentors • Equipment • General allowance • Transport for those who cannot use public transport

  11. Charities for disability support • Snowdon  - closing date 31 May, max £500 • BAHSHE - British Association of Healthcare Services for Students in Higher Education deadlines: 1st March, 1st June, 1st Nov, max £500       • Charlie Bayne Travel Trust -  deadline: end of May, max £500

Charities for general financial support • International students - see UK Council for International Affairs website • embassies • Churches Together in Britain and Ireland - for international students facing financial hardship in final months of course • British Nationals or asylum seekers, refugees, or those with leave to remain - Family Action - has online search form • Those from developing world over 35 years old and in final 6 months of PhD course - The Leche Trust
