Differentiating a Referee from a Linesman Referee Linesman Calls offside Calls Icing Drops the puck at face offs Breaks up fights Waves off offside calls and icing. • Has the ability to call penalties • Distinguishes when there is a goal • Talks to the Hockey Hub if there is a problem in determining a goal
Penalty Calls (Interference) Referee Signal What does this mean? A player on the opposing team hit a player who did not have possession of the puck; or hit a goalie with/without the puck
Penalty Calls (Cross-Checking) Referee Signal: What does this mean? A player on the opposing team hit used both hands on the stick to shove a player/goalie
Penalty Calls (Unsportsmanlike) Referee Signal: What does this mean? A player on either team could have done any of the following to get this call: breaks stick, argues with ref, tries to start a fight, etc.
Penalty Calls (Boarding) Referee Signal: What does this mean? A player on the opposing team hit a player at least 3 feet away from the boards causing him to crash into them.
Penalty Calls (Elbowing) Referee Signal: What does this mean? A player on the opposing team used his elbow to gain ground and/or to force the player off the puck
Penalty Calls (Holding) Referee Signal: What does this mean? A player on the opposing team grabbed either the players jersey, stick or arm in an attempt to gain ground or in efforts to make them loose the puck.
How to Learn Calls • The officiating signals can easily be learned through practice and watching hockey games. The best way to learn the calls is to study the signals and have a friend say the penalty call and you give the signal.
