General The Ankara University Open Access Platform has been developed to: Collect and distribute all kinds of scientific work developed or produced by the academical staff of the University in a single database. • The metadata of the material is entered in DublinCore format together with the original work which can be any valid computer file. • The users can search through the free-text information contained in the material as well as the data in their metadata formats. • The system is being recognized by the OAI consortia and the database can also be searched via the international systems including but not limited to OAI, OAISTER, Google-Scholar etc. • The infrastructure of the system is an open-source, administrator-manageable, multi-user, multi-site and multi-lingual system.
International • The system conforms to the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DC) and it can exchange data with other DC-compliant databases. • Based on the automatically prepared index page, all material entered into the system are automatically indexed by the Google Scholar System and thus the database is also indexed by the Google without any additional operation. • The system is recognized by the OAI Open Archives Initiative and after the proper registration the material in the database can be harvested by the related OAI servers (conforms to the OAI-PMH V2.0 protocol) • The system can also be recognized by any international system (such as OAIster) due to the standard infrastructure. Optionally, the system can also assign an international DOI number to every material inside the database. Currently it works in conjunction with CrossRef to assign DOI numbers based on the prefix obtained by the Ankara University (under development) http://acikarsiv.nethttp://acikerisim.nethttp://demo.acikerisim.net
Summary Internet-based System Developed under open-source philosophy; Can be accessed from any computer with internet connection; No need to install special software for use; Unlimited number of users; Unlimited number of records Flexible Structure Almost every part of the system can be modified by an authorized user; Users can define new material types and fields any time; Localisation for different languages is straightforward; More than one language can be used at the same time; The users can also define report details themselves; Detailed statistical tables and graphs are supplied. International Standards The system conforms to the DC format to enable data exchange with all similar international systems; Curently the systems can be registered to OAI & OAIster and it can work with any other standard harvesting system; In addition to these standards the system also enables the users to conduct free-text searches on the material. No need to register to an international system: it can also work as standalone to serve as a complete Open Archive System for a single institution as well as cluster formations.
