  1. Skeletal System Body Systems

  2. Main Idea • Skeletal system holds the body and keeps its shape

  3. Skeleton • Strong bony frame • Protect the organs • With the help of the joints, the skeleton can move • Skeleton is a noun • Skeletal is an adjective

  4. The first function of the skeletal system is to give your body shape and support it like the framework of a building.

  5. The second function of your skeletal system is to help your body to move. Your major muscles are attached to your bones and facilitate movement.

  6. The third function of the skeletal system is to protect your major organs. Your brain is enclosed in the hard skull. Your heart and lungs are encased in your ribs. Without this protection, any big bump or squish could kill you.

  7. The fourth function of your skeletal system is to act like a factory. Inside some of your bones, there is a soft tissue called marrow. The bone marrow produces blood cells.

  8. Bones

  9. Marrow • It is inside the spongy bone • It makes red blood cells • It is necessary for people with leukemia (cancer in the blood)

  10. The spine and ribs • The spine or backbone is a column of small bones piled one on top of another • 24 bones in your spine • Vertebra (s), vertebrae (p) • They look like rings • Disks are in between each vertebra • 12 pairs of thin bones called ribs are attached to the vertebrae

  11. Skull • 22 bones • Protect the brain (the most delicate organ in our body) • Baby – soft spots (2 years old) • Several holes • Sockets - eyeballs

  12. Arms, legs, hands and feet • Strong tissues hold the bones of the foot together • Hands are so flexible because they are formed of so many bones • Joints connect two bones

  13. Double-jointed

  14. Important fact • Older people lose calcium • It causes to make bones breakable
