Welcome to MathFest, the largest and most exciting math extravaganza on Earth! Informational Meeting February, 7, 2011 Ms. Fullington , Ms. Trapp, & Mrs. Armbruster
Our competition will be held in Greensboro, NC on February 26, 2011 at the Greensboro Coliseum. • We will all meet at one location at a specific time. • Make sure you complete an emergency contact form
Prepare for the competition • Practice answering word problems with your child on a weekly basis. Give a certain time frame to answer the questions • Continue to emphasize to your child that we want them to do the best that he/she can • Arrive early on competition day to fully enjoy the experience
Math Bating Information • Mathbating Team Competition Program is designed to help promote the skills of its members in the areas of math, speaking, debating and interviewing. This competition helps members become more confident in presenting themselves both technically and verbally; skills that can be transferred to a member's personal and professional life.
Math Bating Information • When competitors come into the work area to begin answering Mathbating questions, the work area is called the Deck. • Each Deck must have tables and chairs for each team that is participating. The supervisor of the Deck is the Headmaster. The Headmaster is the person who supervises the students who are working and preparing for the Brief-Up.
Math Bating Information • Once students enter the deck, they are assigned to a Drafting Area which is a table area with seating for 5 students who comprise a team. Once all students arrive at their Drafting Area, the Deck Headmaster will announce that the Deck is now open. This means that each group may send a member of their team to the Head Table to get a math problem for the group to begin to solve. • The Head Table will have multiple problem scenarios and a group may select any problem that is available.
Math Bating Information • The group may change scenarios for any reason, but they can select only one scenario at a time and cannot select an additional scenario until they have turned in their work on the previous problem. Each scenario describes a situation with multiple answer choices.
Math Bating Information • The group must complete the math calculation for each answer choice, then determine which selection they believe is the best. There is no right or wrong selection; however, the group must justify their selection on their worksheet. • The group continues to answer problems until time is called. • The judges will then check the responses on the answer worksheets to determine the winners.

It’s our first time attending this competition and there are still some unknowns for all of us. I have contacted several other CMS elementary schools and it’s their first time attending as well. We will go with the intentions of being aligned with CMS Strategic Plan 2014: preparing our students to be able to globally compete. From this experience…our students will be able to see how their peers all around the state solve math problems, take math seriously, and be ready to come back next year!
