Modifications to the 60GHz PAR & 5 C’s Proposal Date: 2008-04-30 Authors: Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
Abstract This document suggests modifications to the 60 GHz PAR in 11-08-0223-01-0vht-proposal-for-60ghz-vht-par.doc to address study group comments. Minor modifications described for the 5 C’s in 11-08-0224-00-0vht-proposal-for-60ghz-vht-5c.doc. Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
Discussion Points on 60 GHz and 08/223 • Should VHT create an amendment to 802.11 or new standard (i.e. 802.11.3) for 60 GHz? • What changes to 802.11 MAC are required? • Usage models • No mention of range in the PAR proposal • What level of coexistence with 802.15.3c? • In what way does 60 GHz VHT have distinct identity from 802.15.3c? Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
Amendment vs Standard • Opinions voiced that continued amending of 802.11 is becoming unmanageable especially with a major modification • There was discussion suggesting that significant changes to the 802.11 lower MAC may be required for 60 GHz • January 2008 strawpoll: for 57-62GHz, amendment or new standard: • Amendment: 11 • New standard: 29 • We need to maintain and enhance the 802.11 ecosystem • Reuse and maintain backward compatibility to 802.11 management plane • E.g. association, authentication, security, measurement, MIB Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
60 GHz Usage Models • WFA usages in 07/2988 • Desktop storage and display • Video streaming • Sync and Go • Wireless networking for small office • backhaul • Several 60 GHz usages were presented in 07/2587 • High speed cable replacement (HDMI, monitor) • Wireless docking • Sync and Go • Wireless LAN • Many of these are identical to typical PAN applications • Strawpoll in Jan 2008 • Should the study group specify limited usage models in a <6 GHz PAR and a 60 GHz PAR? Y/N/A: 39/1/19 • To limit usage models and differentiate from 802.15.3c, VHT should focus purpose on core of 802.11 which is data networking Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

Coverage • Refer to “Multi-band Modulation and Coding” concept in 07/2780 • Coverage from combo 60 + 2.4/5 GHz devices • Fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands From Heath, Daniels “Multi-band Modulation, Coding, and Medium Access Control”, 07/2780r1 Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
Coexistence with 802.15.3c • Text from 802.15.3c PAR, additional explanatory notes “It is in the best interest of users and the industry to strive for a level of coexistence with other wireless systems, especially those in similar market spaces. Coexistence requirements will be established in the Task Group selection criteria against which the proposals will be evaluated.” • Agreed • Specifically, in scope and “additional comments” we can state that VHT will investigate coexistence with other 60 GHz systems • Furthermore we can set up liaison to 802.15.3c and jointly work on mutual coexistence Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
Summary on Distinct Identity • Usage model • Differentiate from PAN applications of video cable replacement, kiosk sync-and-go • Emphasize typical 802.11 applications like network connectivity and file transfer between devices • Capacity enhancement of wireless networking infrastructure • Reuse and maintain backward compatibility to 802.11 management plane • Retain the 802.11 fundamentals including network architecture • Fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
