Earlier – Mob Mentality, Management using muscle power and money e.g., Namakharam • Now: well in advance – Covert actions by the management cannot be understood by the overt actions of management. Management is taking police help too. • Union / union leaders are being seen as covert enemies e.g., Maruthi Suzuki 2011-12 Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  3. Collective measures- well intended • Individualized – vindictive e.g., dismissing union leader at Regency • Sporadic Violent Industrial relations (Failed IR) now spread across several states. Let’s look at some of them. • KC Raja Rajesheshwaran, DGM, Madras Cements was hacked to death by a suspended employee on 12 April, 2012. Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

January, 2012 MS Murali Mohan founder of Workers union at Regency died (reportedly due to police beating) – large scale violence – wage hike / regularization out of 1200, 800 are contact laborers. In the Ransom /looting that followed 50 vehicles were set on fire, factory ransacked. KC Chandrashekar VP (Operations) beaten to death. • March 2011 RS Roy, DGM of Graphic India, Tilagarh in Orissa – Set on Fire – impending retrenchment and refusal to hike wages – steel industry was doing well – Orissa good people- exploitation. November, 2010 MrJoginder Singh HR Manager of Allied Nippon ., Ghaziabad killed by sacked agitating employees – shift change , law full strike. • September, 2009- Pricol, Coimbatore-Tamilnadu, VP [HR] Roy J George Assaulted – hike in salary and regularization of contract workers • September, 2008 LK Chowdhary. CEO Graziano Transmission India – killed – 300 workers dismissed – wage hike and regularization. • Maruti Suzuki Manesar Plant – Recognition of Trade Union Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy

  6. Why contract labour? • Cheep labour. As per the Contact Labour (Regulation And Abolition) Act 1970 companies can engage temporary workers for a shorter duration. • What needs to be done? • Communicate, communicate, communicate • Engage , empower, energize and empathize • Transparency in working • Wider consultation • Addressing the concerns e.g., computerization in PSU Banks • Should manage rather than preventing E.g., SWAL Dr A Jagan Mohan Reddy
