Vietnam War Eric M. Cobb
U.S. Leaflets • The U.S. used leaflets like these ones to try and convince Vietnam villages to join them • The ones featured here give the message that the war is not going the VC’s way • The other group that the U.S. was trying to keep the villages from helping was the NVA • I was informed that they also used Leaflets to ask for assistance to locate and bring to them U.S. soldiers that were lost in the area • Thing is they were dumping those leaflets even where they knew no American soldiers were.
U.S. Leaflets Continued • Who: U.S. Military • What: dropping leaflets • Where: in Vietnam • When: somewhere between 1959 and April 30, 1975 • Why: to try and persuade local villagers to support the war against the VC and NVA.
Vietnam Christmas Cards • A form of propaganda that the Vietnamese used on the soldiers was Christmas Cards • One example that was found is this one with the “waiting wife” at a table alone because her husband is in the war • The outside has Santa Claus with leaflets coming out of his bag saying among other things “stop the war” • The main thing that the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam said in essences that the war was not Americas so they should leave the country. • When it came to their propaganda when it came to the U.S. being at fault, it was the “corrupt politicians” fault
Vietnam Christmas Cards Continued • Who: Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (DRVN) • What: Sent Christmas Cards to US soldiers • Where: in Vietnam • When: somewhere between 1959 and April 30, 1975 • Why: to try and convince them to go home
Comparison to Modern Day • Today in the U.S. elections, they try to make it seem like you are their best pal a lot like the Christmas Cards the soldiers got from the from VC supporters. Every side is trying to convince the country that they are the “winning team” which is the same goal of the American Leaflets in the Vietnam War.
