  3. The purpose of writing to explain is to provide answers to questions, give reasons, or help someone to understand a process.

Techniques to remember: • Use general statements as an introduction to the subject. • Use formal language in the present tense. • Don’t use emotional tone – the audience don’t want to hear your opinion here. • Use facts to help support your explanation. • Be clear and detailed – don’t confuse your reader • Create a summative final sentence.

  5. Appropriate connectives Because of… As a result of… Therefore… Consequently… Since… When… In order to… As a consequence of…

  6. Tips for the Exam • Make sure you know what the task you are being asked to complete involves. • Be clear in your mind what the purpose and audience are. • Underline or highlight key words or phrases. • Plan the ideas you’re going to use. • Make sure you explain your ideas clearly.

  7. Example of an Exam question There is a wide range of pressures on young people today. Explain what you take to be the main pressures and how they affect you as well as people you know.
