  1. GANG ACTIVITIES/GANGSTERISM WHAT IS A GANG? (DEFINE)

  2. A gang refers to a sub-culture or a small group which breaks away from a larger group and does not adhere to the practices of the larger society of community.

  3. Name the different types of gang one would find one would find in a correctional centre?

  4. Different types of gangs in a correctional centre: The 28th gang. The 26th gang. The Air-force gang. The Big (5) Five gang.

  5. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 28TH GANG: • They are concerned with blood. • They are fighters and believe that they will fix the unsatisfactory conditions within the correctional environment. • They are concerned with the quality of food they are served.

  6. They participate in activities such as riots and unrests which are aimed at making the correctional centre unmanageable. • They keep “boys, wife's /Wyfies” and practice sodomy.

  7. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 26TH GANG: • They are concerned with comfort and convenience. • They obtain goods such as food, drugs, etc. by means of cunning actions in order to enable them to lead a luxury life. Such actions involve theft, robbery and smuggling, etc. • They practice complete secrecy. No gang member is allowed to reveal the secrets of the gang, especially to correctional officials or else they will die.

  8. They usually practice violence at night. Orders to stab other offenders or correctional officials are often carried out. • They manufacture weapons according to the instruction of the leader, the “General”, who also instructs them on how to use these weapons. • They do not indulge in sexual practices.

  9. Characteristics of the Big Five (5) gang: • They cooperate with the authorities/correctional officials for their safety and protection. • They practice sodomy and smuggling. • They act as informers “pimps” to correctional officials and as a result they are always in conflict with other gangs. • Members are usually cleaners and orderlies who use their positions to pursue, to mobilize and to disguise their smuggling activities.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AIR-FORCE GANG: • They are more concerned with escaping from Correctional Centre. • They smuggle unauthorized articles which will aid their escape from Correctional Centre's. • They engage in violent activities mainly towards correctional officials, thereby facilitating escapes. • They collaborate with the 28th gang when they plan escapes

  11. WAYS OF AVOIDING GANG INVOLVEMENT: • Abiding by the rules and regulations of a correctional centre. • Dealing with the actual reason for your incarceration and acknowledging that you have to serve your sentence. • Taking part in available activities within the correctional centre such as different sporting codes, training and development programmes, therapeutic interventions, correctional programmes etc. • Apply self-control and make positive plans for the future.
