Jonathon Swift • Born in Ireland, to a family of English heritage • Feud between England and Ireland • Swift was never really content with personal life or social atmosphere and took to writing satire
Jonathon Swift • Raised mostly in Ireland • became clergy in the Church of Ireland • Moved to England as adult and attempted to rise to power in church • Unsuccessful, he returned to Ireland
Jonathon Swift • First story, “Tale of a Tub,” published in 1704 anonymously and was considered blasphemous by Queen Anne • Moved to London and began writing/editing for Tory Journal The Examiner • After Queen Anne dies, he returns to Ireland, for good, and continues to write • Writings and satires destroyed any chance he had of attaining power or status within church
Jonathon Swift • Most works were published anonymously • Writings were a success, especially Gulliver’s Travels which became instantly famous after publication in 1726 • Common topics were: • human nature vs. common sense • Political allegories • Human stupidity and the destruction of society
