  1. Structurally Sound Personal Narrative

  2. Prompt- Write about a special day that you have had with your family or your friends. • Early one July 4th morning my friend, Kim, called and invited me to go to South Carolina that night to see a fireworks display. I knew this was going to be a very special trip because I had heard that the fireworks were beautiful. • Monday

  3. That night Kim and her son Thomas picked me up in their van and we drove to a big field near the Buster Boyd Bridge in Lake Wylie, South Carolina. When we arrived we spread out a blanket to sit on. As we all took our places on the blanket, I noticed that the field was really crowded and loud. I could barely hear myself think because it was so noisy. Did you notice the bolded words? Let’s read them again. Why are these words bolded? Do you know what we call these words? Monday

  4. Embedded Transitions- • That night Kim and her son Thomas picked me up in their van and we drove to a big field near the Buster Boyd Bridge in Lake Wylie, South Carolina. When we arrived we spread out a blanket to sit on. As we all took our places on the blanket, I noticed that the field was really crowded and loud. I could barely hear myself think because it was so noisy. The bolded words are embedded transitions. They are transitions found within a paragraph that helps move from one idea to another. Monday

  5. Now let’s see if you can find the embedded transitions… • After a while the band started to play. They began byplaying Dixie and then they continuedwith other patriotic songs such as This Land is Your Land. When the band finished, a short lady in a red, white, and blue outfit sang or national anthem. She sang very well. Everyone was really quiet during her song. • Tuesday

  6. Were you able to identify the embedded transitions?Check below to see if you were right. • After a while the band started to play. They began by playing Dixie and then they continued with other patriotic songs such as This Land is Your Land. When the band finished, a short lady in a red, white, and blue outfit sang or national anthem. She sang very well. Everyone was really quiet during her song. • Tuesday

  7. This time, read the following paragraphs and write the embedded transitions on your paper. • Finally, it was time for the fireworks. They were magnificent. As they began to explode big blasts of red, blue, purple, and other colors filled the sky. Others whizzed around the sky. My favorite was one that looked like a mushroom. • At the very end, they shot one that exploded first into lots of little swirls and theninto two big bursts of blue. As each new burst of color would appear there was a popping sound. This one lasted longer than any of the others. Everyone in the crowd said “Ahhh” at the same time as it exploded into beautiful colors. Afterwards the sky became dark again. • When we got home, we had cake with red, white, and blue icing on it. That was a very special way to end a very special day. Wednesday

  8. Check your answers… • Finally, it was time for the fireworks. They were magnificent. As they began to explode big blasts of red, blue, purple, and other colors filled the sky. 9. Embedded Transitions Now, you will choose one of your writings from your writing folder. Do you see any embedded transitions? Not transitions found at the beginning of the paragraph, but transitions found within the paragraph. Highlight all of the embedded transitions in the writing. Thursday

  10. Add embedded transitions • Let’s make your writing better and smoother. This time you will choose a writing and add embedded transitions. You may use the same writing or choose another. Be sure to highlight the newly added transitions. • Friday
