Elements of Social Action • The Actor Individual who perform an act. • The Goal objective for the which the action was done. • Social Situation. The social situation instigate the actor to action • Normative orientation. The pattern on which social action is done is called norm. • Energy Physical energy and training are essential for an act
Types of Social Action • Rational orientation to individual ends. – individuals can choose both means and ends. Cause and effect applied 2. Rational orientation to an absolute value independent of prospects for success/benefit. – Can choose means, but only in relation to absolute, fixed end. 3• Affectional orientation.Action according to people Feelings. 4• Traditional orientation The way it’s always been done.cultures values are important.

Cooperation • occurs when people act together to promote common interest or achieve shared goals. -basketball teammates -husband and wife do so to pay the mortgage -college students will do so to prepare for an exam • Spontaneous cooperation, is the truest and most natural form of human social cooperation
Types of cooperation 1.Direct cooperation working together like playing, studying. 2.Indirect cooperation owners of a mill and its worker cooperate with an other. • Competition • Occurs when two or more people or groups oppose each other to achieve a goal that only one can attain
Competition • A form of conflict in which individuals or groups confine their conflict within agreed-upon rules. -the modern world creates many environments for the existence of competition -sports -marketplace -educational system -political system
Forms of competition • Absolute and Relative competition • absolute competition is selection of one among pool. • relative competition wealth competition or Fame competition. • Personal and Impersonal competition • personal competition depend upon personal interest. • impersonal competition where personal interest is not involved.

Conflicts arise when people have incompatible values or they are competing for limited resources. -always involve an attempt to gain or use power -is universally viewed as negative but is quite necessary Coercion (a form of conflict), can reside as a form of conflict but is often used from the position of power, equally, coercion is intended to avoid conflict through the threat of conflict
