  3. Why Is Authority Important In The Home? • Authority In The Home Ordained by God • Husbands have Authority over Wives- 1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 5:22-24; Acts 5:29 • Parents need to correct their own relationship toward authority first

Parents Have Authority Over Children • Proverbs 1:8 “hear instruction of your father ... not forsake the law of your mother.” • Deuteronomy 21:18-21 “son… stubborn & rebellious… stone him to death with stones.” • Romans 1:30,32 “disobedient to parents” “deserving of death” • Ephesians 6:1; Colossians 3:20 “obey your parents”

  8. Authority Molds Children’s Character & Habits • Proverbs 22:6 “train up… in the way he should go” • How can parents get children to practice & develop good habits? • 1 Corinthians 13:11 • 1 Samuel 2:22-25; 3:12,13 “his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.”

  9. Parental Authority Teaches Children Proper Attitudes Toward All Authority • Must Learn to Submit to Others who Have Authority & how to Exercise Authority when They Have it • Develop Proper Authority Relationship Between Our Children & Ourselves • Does God know best, or Doesn’t He?

Parental Authority Teaches Children Proper Attitudes Toward All Authority • People Must Learn How to Relate to the Authority of God • God is an “Authority Figure” –to receive eternal life, must OBEY HIM – Matthew 28:18-20; 7:21-27; Ecclesiastes 12:13; Hebrews 5:8,9; 1 Peter 1:22 • Use of Authority Not Contrary to Love, but proper exercise of Love

How Should Children Show Respect For Authority? • Must Act Obediently – Ephesians 6:1; Colossians 3:20 • You should expect your children to obey You like God will expect them to obey Him • Must Speak Respectfully- Ephesians 6:2,3; Matthew 15:4; Proverbs 30:11,17; 1 Timothy 5:1 • Respectful ways to Speak to a father and Disrespectful ways

How Should Children Show Respect For Authority? • May a Child Ever Express Disagreement with Parent’s Decision? • 1 Timothy 5:1 – includes telling him he was wrong – be respectful • Rebellion will not be tolerated • Children must Never Strike Their Parents- Exodus 21:15 – Put to death under Old Law.
