Hermeneutics • Hermeneutics = The branch of knowledge that deals with interpretation of the Bible. • The need of Hermeneutics is to determine and understand the meaning of Biblical text. • Thepurpose of Hermeneutics is to bridge the gap between our minds and the minds of the Biblical writers through a knowledge of 3 things. • original languages, • ancient history • comparison of Scripture with Scripture.
Why study the Bible? • To know the mind of God. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) • 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the Lord.9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. • Becouse we love God. • To know who we are—big questions in life • grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. • 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Tanakh is an acronym of the first Hebrew letter of each of the Masoretic Text's three traditional subdivisions: Torah ('Teaching', also known as the Five Books of Moses), Nevi'im ('Prophets') and Ketuvim ('Writings')—hence TaNaKh.
“Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:36-49).
Midrash • an ancient commentary on part of the Hebrew scriptures, attached to the biblical text. The earliest Midrashim come from the 2nd century AD, although much of their content is older.
Talmud=Moses received the Torah as a written text alongside an oral version or commentary. This oral section is now what the Jews call the Talmud. • Aramaic Targums= The targumim (singular targum, Hebrew: תרגום) were originally spoken translations of the Jewish scriptures (also called the Tanakh) that a meturgeman(professional interpreter) would give in the common language of the listeners when that was not Hebrew. This had become necessary near the end of the 1st century BC, as the common language was Aramaic and Hebrew was used for little more than schooling and worship

God cannot be contained • God cannot be contained (1 Kings 8:27) and does not dwell in temples made with hands (Isa. 66:1; Acts 17:24), so how did the temple contain God? (2 Chron. 7:12-16).
