Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Disinfectants
Disinfectants When selecting a disinfectant, ▸ Both disinfecting properties and safety must be considered. Many chemicals are toxic, corrosive, or irritants. Accidents can occur if the proper protection is not used correctly or according to the instructions." ▸ Disinfectants, are antimicrobial substances that can be applied to inanimate surfaces to kill microorganisms. ▸ Helps in removing viruses, fungi, mold, and mildew from surfaces and inanimate objects. 2
Types of Disinfectants ▸ As previously stated, there are many different types of disinfectants, but there are roughly seven major types in use today. ▸ Here is a summary of the categories: 3
1. Alcohols Alcohol is very effective against bacteria and can be easily combined with water, though fairly high concentrations are required when disinfecting wet surfaces. The disadvantage of using alcohols is that they are highly flammable and quickly evaporate. Furthermore, their effectiveness is limited when dealing with organic matter, such as blood.
2. Quaternary Ammonium Compounds Widely used in hospitals and institutions, not so much for their efficacy as they are for their low cost and effectiveness against a wide range of microorganisms. An added benefit is that quats can be combined with a wide range of detergents for cleaning and disinfecting.
3. Phenolic Compounds Pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses are all particularly susceptible to phenolic compounds. The disadvantage is that they are extremely toxic and corrosive, and they frequently damage the surfaces being treated.
4. Chlorine Compounds Kills a wide variety of organisms, including viruses that are resistant to chlorine. They are frequently used to clean bodily fluids. They also have the advantage of being cheap and quick to act. The disadvantage is that many of them are corrosive and difficult to handle.
5. Aldehydes A highly effective anti-bacterial agent, though they require a high part per million ratio to be fully effective. some strains of bacteria have already developed resistance to aldehydes, reducing their overall effectiveness. Furthermore, aldehydes have been linked to asthma and other health issues.
6. Iodophors Idophors are not commonly used these days, despite the fact that they can be used to disinfect some semi-critical medical equipment, but they stain surfaces and have an unpleasant odor.
7. Hydrogen Peroxide Although HP is relatively effective, it can be highly reactive when mixed with other chemicals or in contact with certain surfaces. The truth is that its utility is limited, and it can be hazardous if used in sufficient concentrations. Bottom line: There are better and more effective alternatives.
How to Use Disinfectants Safely Precautions should be taken when using and/or storing disinfectants: ▸ Avoid eating, drinking, or storing food in areas where disinfectants are present. Immediately wash your hands and face after using any disinfectant. Maintain adequate ventilation in storage areas. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use. Unless otherwise specified, never mix disinfectants with other cleaning agents. Keep disinfectants in areas that are cool, dry, and well-ventilated. ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ 11
DISINFECTANT SURFACE SPRAYS Disinfectant spray generates charged droplets of disinfectant that exit the spray nozzle and adhere to the surface of an object's sides, curves, crevices, and so on.
