Introduction Sikkim first became a Protectorate of India and on 16th May 1975 it joined the Indian Union as the 22nd state of India with a special constitution provision Article 371 F. Sikkim is a strategically hill state covering an area of 7096 sq kms (which accounts for 0.2% of the total area of India) and having a population of 5,40,851. Sikkim is encircled by three different international boundaries- to its west lies Nepal and Bhutan, to its east Tibet Autonomus Region of the People’s Republic of China and to its south, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council of West Bengal. Sikkim is recognised as one of the special category states of the country and has been recently inducted as the 8th member of the North Eastern Council of States. The basic indicators are given as under:
Introduction cont… Some of the highest peaks and the third highest mountain in the world, the Kanchendzonga (8588 metres) is located within the State. There are many glaciers in Sikkim. Among them, the most important are the Zemu glacier, Rathong glacier and the Lhonak glacier in North Sikkim. Besides this, mountain ranges have a number of passes which are used to cross over from one side to the other. The Nathula, Jelepla and Chola pass lead into the Chumbi valley in Tibet through the Chola range in the east. Sikkim has spring fed as well as river fed lakes like the Tsomgo lake, Memencho and the Bidang Cho in the east, Khechodparli lies in the west of Sikkim. Sikkim is connected to the rest of the country by its 115 km lifeline; the NH-31/A. this is the only road connecting it to the rest of the country via Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Besides this, Sikkim runs a five - seater heli service between Bagdogra, the nearest airport and Gangtok, its capital. The important rail head is New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal around 4 hours away from the capital, Gangtok.
Success Story TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN – SIKKIM ‘NIRMAL RAJYA’ (click here more Details) Recognizing the importance of Sanitation and its effect on the progress and well being of the State, the Government of Sikkim fixed 2009 as the target year to achieve total sanitation as against the Government of India target year of 2012. To give it further impetus and accelerate the pace of implementation, in May 2008 TSC was taken up on a Mission Mode. It was made mandatory for all Gram Sabhas conducted in the state to take up sanitation as a top priority on their agenda. In addition, the State Government also amended the Panchayati Raj Act making it mandatory for the PRI members to construct toilets of their own in their households, failing which, the nominations of the PRI members for Panchayat elections are rejected. Several IEC activities were carried out diligently over a period of time in the form of printed booklets, pamphlets, audio-visual documentaries, multi-media presentations, banners, posters and bill boards in English as well as the regional languages of Sikkim.
Success Story Cont.. The positive political will of the Government with ready access to the, the Chief Minister, concerned Minister and the flexible approach adopted by the Department where necessary contributed immensely in the form of prompt and crucial decisions. For successfully implementing the programme, 27 GPUs of Sikkim were for the first time, awarded the prestigious ‘Nirmal Gram Puruskar’ by His Excellency, the President of India in May 2007. The Nirmal Gram Puraskar for 2008 was received by 37 GPUs of Sikkim from HE, the President of India, during the NGP award ceremony in Guwahati on 20/10/08. Subsequently, the remaining 99 GPUs were awarded the NGP in November, 2008, thereby achieving total sanitation of the entire state in terms of 100% coverage in rural Households, schools, aganwadis, institutional and community toilets, and making Sikkim the first ever NirmalRajya of the country., On 8th December, 2008, the Chief Minister, Dr. PawanChamling was awarded a gold medal for achieving this very unique feat by Her Excellency, the President of India in a glittering ceremony in Pune.

Pledge taken on Project inauguration day (10th, July, 2010) • I love my state Sikkim and its Beauty. • I never through any garbage in roads or burn them in any public place. • I will follow SLRM rules and regulation to keep my surrounding Neat, Clean and preserve our Beautiful. • I will separate organic and inorganic and keep in two different Dustbins, before I handed over to our Street beautifiers, twice a day (Every 12 Hrs). • 5. I will do my best and support my country to achieve 100% sanitation.
