ENDURING UNDERSTANDING • The diversity of cells contributes to the diversity of life on Earth.
LEARNING GOAL • I will observe structures and behaviors of single-celled microorganisms with a microscope. • I will compare elodea cells and paramecia cells.
ORGANISMS • Today we will observe a protist microorganism called Paramecium. • Let’s look at an example of one and how to make a wet mount of this specimen.
OBSERVATIONS • What movements did you observe? • What did you see on the inside of the organism? • What did you see on the outside of the paramecium? • How big was it at 100x? At 400x? • Are they living or nonliving? What is your evidence? • Could you see if it was doing all of the things you have listed in your definition of a living organism? • What might we do to see some of these activities?
