  2. Horse meat fraud • EU (the European Union) has taken initiatives to improve food safety assurance • In spring 2013 horse meat was fraudulently presented as beef and consumers were grossly misled Viikki Campus Library / Raisa Iivonen

Veterinarycurriculum (Finland) • Basic degreestructure is two-tier : Bachelor of VeterinaryMedicine (180 ECTS 3 years) and Licenciate of VeterinaryMedicine (180 ECTS 3 years) • Demandsfrom the EU and Finnishlegislation • Aim: provide the students with competence for the veterinarian’sprofession • Day 1 Skillsincludenotonly the traditionalveterinarytasksbutalsogovernmentalduties: food hygiene in a largeextent and alsoanimalwelfare Viikki Campus Library / Raisa Iivonen

Curriculumunderconstruction • More integration between basic veterinary sciences and applied content • More emphasis on the animal welfare • Division of Meat inspection training into two sections: • Year 3 (meat inspection) and Year 5 (control at the slaughterhouse) • Reorganization of Meat inspection technique and Meat inspection courses to be taught on 3rd and 4th year and more co-operation with studies in production animal health • A new international textbookon Meatinspection and slaughterhousecontrol Viikki Campus Library / Raisa Iivonen
