Reliability – High Level View • Pumped-Storage reliability plays a key role in allowing the FirstEnergy generation portfolio to produce cost competitive electricity in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. • This presentation provides a behind the scenes view of how reliability is achieved at FirstEnergy’s pumped hydro stations.   5. Vibration Analysis & Thrust Measurement • Bentley Nevada transducers are used. • Axial thrust plus 3 bearings are monitored. • Continuously monitored. • Data displayed and stored on Yokogawa system. Reliability 5

  6. Temperatures • Various air, water and oil temperatures are monitored. • Continuously monitored. • Stored and displayed on Yokogawa system. Reliability 6

  7. Lubricating Oil Analysis • Oil samples are taken from Guide Bearings and Thrust Bearing on the pump/turbine. • Oil samples are taken from other large motors. • The analysis is done by an in-house laboratory. • Items analyzed for include: water, viscosity, foreign material. • Tested every six months. 7

  8. Thermography • Performed by in-house group. • Only performed on electricalequipment. • 14.4 kv and above unless anissue is suspected. • Conducted annually. Reliability 8

  9. Non Destructive Evaluation • Performed by outside vendor. • Dye penetrant tests are conducted on runner vanes. • Performed twice a year. Reliability 9

  10. Air Gap Monitoring & PDA • Performed by outside vendor. • Equipment is permanently installed. • Performed annually. Reliability 10

  11. Civil Works – Weirs & Piezometers • Piezometers are manually read. Data is logged into an Excel spreadsheet. • Weirs are a combination of manually read and recorded 24/7. • Visual inspectionsconducted twicea week. Reliability 11

Civil Works – Seneca Inspections • One of the first Upper Reservoir’s to use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in the U.S.. • One key to success was navigational andside scan sonar. • Second key was knowing the exactlocation of the ROV at all times. • Upper Reservoir is visuallyinspected twice a year. • Upper Reservoir is surveyedtwice a year. Reliability 12

  13. Piping • Facility is built primarily with concrete, unlike a fossil station which uses structural steel. • Significant amount of piping is embedded in the concrete. • Video inspection is being utilized more as the piping ages. • Aggressively pursuingtechnologiessuch as cast in placepiping (CIPP). Reliability 13
