SLAC Association for Student Seminars The Mystery of Missing Mass Alex Drlica-Wagner Almost everywhere we look, the Universe seems to contain more mass than can be accounted for by ordinary (baryonic) matter. This problem of "missing mass" has troubled physicists and astronomers for almost 80 years. The leading candidate for this mysterious dark matter is a new fundamental particle, a type of matter different from the protons, neutrons, and electrons that we are familiar with. I will give an overview of the dark matter problem and focus a bit on how it may be possible to indirectly detect dark matter via gamma rays.
