Haiti: A Project of Love Arrival at Port-Au-Prince • Mission: to explore different possibilities of Solar Energy use for cookers, water purification and electricity
Problems The Haitian community suffers two types of problems: • Problems that do NOT require external assistance • Problem that may ONLY be alleviated with external assistance
Problems that DO NOT require external assistance • Caring for the environment • Improvement of education facilities
Problems that require external assistance • The fundamental source of energy in Port de Paix’s region is charcoal. To obtain it they cut trees and the consequences are:
Deforestation • Deforestation • Less land for agriculture
Where are the mountains moving? • During the rainy season, and due to the deforestation, the rain moves the land from mountains to the sea. The lower picture shows Port de Paix’s bay full of earth coming from the mountains
Possible Solutions • Education • Environmental concerns • The use of renewable energy systems to generate Electricity and Heat
Exploring Education • Prof. Varela from STU discussing problems of Calculus with students of high school in Port de Paix
Exploring Education • Prof. Varela from STU discussing problems of Physics with students of high school in Mares Rouges, Part de Paix
Visiting Baie de Henne’s school • Building • Classrooms
Planting the seed… In Baie de Hanne a team from STU, Caritas Miami and Amor en Acción, presented the principal with information and discussed how to use solar energy to cook and generate electricity
…and we did it! This food that we are sharing was made using solar energy. With this simple demonstration, one of the facility’s major obstacles was solved in 45 minutes: the resistance to change old habits. We showed them how they can play a part in avoiding collateral health issues, preserving their environment, and saving money simply by using solar energy.
Planning for the Future Goals • To create a permanent program between STU, Caritas Miami, and Amor en Acción to provide training and equipments to construct Solar Ovens and Solar Cookers in Baie de Hanne’s school. • To extend this program to the Baie de Hanne community. • To take this program to other communities in the Port de Paix region.
