  4. Renaissance GRAPES- R - RELIGION • Catholic Church still powerful in Europe (but becoming more corrupt) • Humanism spreads quickly (less focus on the Church) • Split in the Church– Catholic vs. Protestant (Martin Luther)

  5. Renaissance GRAPES – A- ART • Famous period for European Art • Most famous artists/inventors: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Johannes Gutenberg, William Shakespeare • Famous artwork: Mona Lisa, David, the Duomo in Florence, printing press, etc.

  6. Renaissance GRAPES- P- POLITICS • Wealthy merchant/banking families held power in Italian city-states • Medici Family = MOST POWERFUL • Catholic Church’s power goes back and forth

  7. Renaissance GRAPES – E - ECONOMICS • Huge amount of trade growth between Europe, Asia, and Middle East • Mediterranean Sea remains the world’s most important sea trade route • Exploration for other trade routes begins (discovery of Americas)

  8. Renaissance GRAPES- S - SOCIETY • Feudalism = DEAD • Rise of the merchant/middle class (more money to go around) • Less focus on religion, more focus on art, science, and LEARNING
