The Carbon Snake Chemical Reactions: • Powdered sugar reacts with sulfuric acid to produce carbon and water • The reaction is exothermic, which means it releases a lot of heat as it takes place. • This is known as a dehydration reaction because water is removed from the sugar during the reaction • Because of the heat of the reaction, the water produced evaporates during the reaction leaving the solid carbon as a product

Safety • Wear gloves, an apron and goggles during the demo • The demo should be performed in a fume hood due to the fumes released during the experiment • Since heat is released during the reaction, make sure everythign has cooled down before you touch it or attempt to clean up the mess!
