Semester Project MAIN IDEA
What does literature say about us as human beings? We as human beings have an innate need to conform
Semester Project Textual Examples
Fahrenheit 451 • “No one has time any more for anyone else.” (Bradbury). • This quote is said by Clarisse when talking to Montag. She’s describing how people conform so much to the non-stop lifestyle that no one has anytime to talk or think.
The Pedestrian • "Everything went on in the tomb-like houses at night now...where the people sat like the dead..."(Bradbury). • This quote from “The Pedestrian” describes the mind-set of the citizens as the “dead people” meaning they can’t think for themselves.
Lord of the Flies • "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.“ (Golding) • This quote is thought by Ralph when he’s thinking about what has happened. It shows how the boys have all left the “lawful” tribe, or his tribe, and all gone Jack’s tribe. This shows how people need to conform even if it’s to the more attractive side until it becomes normal.
A Whole New Mind • “The last few decades have belonged to a certain kind of person with a certain kind of mind…” (Pink) • This is saying that the past decades have been people conforming to the White Collar jobs.
1984 • “A nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working, fighting, triumphing, persecuting—three hundred million people all with the same face." (Orwell) • This quote from 1984 is Winston describing the fate of the world. He describes it as endless marching people all doing, thinking and saying the same things. This expresses people’s need to conform as so great that they will eventually all be the same.
“Conform, Conform, Conform” • “Belonging is the prime aim, the group is all I've got(Without it I'm a Nothing, and Nothing's not a lot).” (Macwilliam) • This poem is saying that people need to conform, to belong to a group by say that without conforming, we are nothing.
Romeo and Juliet • “Two households, both alike in dignity…From ancient grudge break new mutiny…” (Shakespeare) • This quote from “Romeo and Juliet” describes the grudge between the Montagues and the Capulets as having been continued over many generations. This shows that the two families are conforming to their pasts and continue fighting.

Do you agree with what literature says about us as human beings? • “I don't agree because that's how we had the revolution and how new ideas are always coming.” BRIAN
Semester Project Modern Examples
Modern example of Fahrenheit 451 • Today’s society is changing, fast. • The first round the world trip in the air was made by the USAF in 175 days • Most recent record by Steve Fossett in 67 hours (2 days 9 hrs)
Then & Now (& Future???) Then (1923) Now (2005) Future? (in development)
Modern example of The Pedestrian • In “The Pedestrian” people can’t think for themselves • About 50 million voters watching American Idol. • Why are there judges?
Modern example of Lord of the Flies • Boys conform to side that looks more fun • This ideal can also be seen on places like wall street
Modern example of AWNM • Industry is trying to make a new path for people to conform. (AKA buy) • The ever changing venue of music is a good example since new venues and new artists are constantly changing
The Cycle of Music Mainstream/Pop classic ∞ Rising/ underground Old/ Absolute Breakup Creation
Modern example of 1984 • 1984 forces marching masses to have one face, hence conforming. • In modern society, this concept is represented in the popular video game of “America’s Army” “If you try something stupid-for instance, gunning down civilians or ignoring orders- you can end up in a virtual Leavenworth prison or find yourself banished from the game altogether.” (Pink, AWNM, pg.191)
Modern example of Poetry • In “Conform, Conform, Conform,” the poem states that people have to conform because without conforming, we are nothing. • In a very literal sense, this is much like the formation of the Blood gang in L.A.
Modern example of Romeo and Juliet • The Palestinians are taught to hate western civilization from an early age. • Based on 4 things • Islamic supremacy • The destruction of Israel • The death of the Jews • Promoting terror and violence
FARFUR: Teaching children hate every morning!
As if that wasn’t enough… At a kindergarten graduation…
