Dear Colleague. We regret to inform you that the Finnish minister of transport and communications and the minister of environment have decided on closing down the Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR) as of the 1st of January 2009. The personnel of FIMR will be split in two. Biological and chemical activity together with the research vessel Aranda are planned to be moved to the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), whereas physical activity is planned to be moved to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). This decision has not been negotiated with FIMR. The personnel of FIMR have not been informed of the reasons for this sudden and dramatic decision. • The personnel of FIMR are trying their best to convince Finnish politicians that this decision is fatal to Finnish marine research. All your support and assistance will be highly appreciated. For additional information, you may contact any person at FIMR that you know.
