Because Jesus Wept • His humanity is confirmed (Son of man), 1 Jno 4:2-3; 2 Jno 7 • Emotions infer His humanity • What His humanity means, Heb 2:14-18 • Died to destroy the devil, 2:14 (10:5) • Release us from the bondage of fear of death (sin), 2:15-17 • He suffered, He was tempted and He overcame in order to aid us, 2:18
Because Jesus Wept • His deity is confirmed (Son of God), Jno 11:25-26, 38-44 • The divine heart that hurts for us • His power over death gives blessed healing and joy • God’s compassion for sinners, Luke 15:20
Because Jesus Wept • God allows human suffering, Jno 11:15, 21-23, 38-40 • Suffering is common to all due to sin and Satan’s activity, Gen 3:17-19; Job 1:7-12 • God does not allow suffering because… • He does not care, 1 Pet 5:7 • He is not interested, Phil 4:6-7 • He is unable to respond, Lk 1:37 • He is punishing sin, Jno 9:1-3
Because Jesus Wept • God allows human suffering, Jno 11:15, 21-23, 38-40 • God is fully acquainted with suffering: Jesus on the cross! Isaiah 53:3-5 • See the bigger picture beyond suffering: • Growth of our personal faith, 1 Pet 1:6-9 • Spiritual discipline (if we will accept it), Heb 12:7, 11 • We do not lose heart – we keep our eyes on heaven! 2 Cor 4:16-18
Jesus wept and/or was made sorrowful… • When sinners harden their hearts and refuse to believe, Mark 3:5 • People harden hearts due to: • Allegiance to tradition, Mk 7:5-13 • Praise of men, Jno 12:42-43 • Deceitfulness of sin, Heb 3:12-13 • Stubborn rebellion, Ezek 3:7 Do not grieve God! Eph 4:30
Jesus wept and/or was made sorrowful… • When God’s people rebel and will not repent, Luke 19:41 • God does not take pleasure in the death of sinners, Ezekiel 18:30-32 • Season of grace, Luke 19:42, 44; 2 Pet 3:9, 15
Jesus wept and/or was made sorrowful… • During moment of great trial, Heb 5:7 (Mk 14:33) • Gethsemane, Matt 26:37-38 • Yet, His great trial did not keep Him from personal sacrifice, submission and steadfastness! • Emboldened through faith, obedience and divinecomfort, Lk 22:43-44
Lessons for Us • Have a heart of compassion for others when they hurt, Col 3:12; Rom 12:15-16; 1 Pet 3:8-9 • Spiritual trials and trouble, Gal 6:1-2 • Physical needs, Acts 20:35
Lessons for Us • We must trust God when we hurt and suffer loss, Heb 13:5-6 • Even though we don’t understand the reason, cf. Job, Jas 5:10-11 • How? By trusting the outcome God will give (Jas 5:11) • Jesus, Matt 27:45-46; Psa 22:1, 11, 19-24 • Paul, 2 Tim 4:16-18
Lessons for Us • Live and believe in Jesus, Jno 11:26 • Become a Christian, Rom 6:3-4 (Col 2:12) • Be faithful, Rom 6:1-2, 11; Gal 2:20; Col 3:1-5 • Walk in God’s good works, Eph 2:10 • Spiritual growth: Commitment and time, 1 Pet 2:1-3
Lessons for Us • A weeping Jesus assures us that God cares for us • A powerful Jesus assures us that God will raise us from the dead • The same Jesus can raise you from your death in sin • A reigning Jesus will judge us
