  2. Welcome to the 6th Grade! • This is an important year for you! • I will give you an introduction to school rules, regulations, and information to be successful at Stevenson Middle School. • If you have any questions during my presentation, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

  3. All About Me • My Background • I grew up in Compton. • I attended Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Elementary, Walton Junior High, Compton High, and Kansas State University. • My Experience • I’ve been teaching for 20 years. • I have taught 6th grade Math, Science, and Health at this school since 1994.

  5. Goals • To give you the academic tools you need to progress to 7th grade. • To provide a supportive learning environment. • To have fun while we learn. • To make new friends and discover new interests.

  6. Class Content • We will cover 6th grade Math and Science and Health • You will get the Common Core Textbooks and work books for those subjects. • We will be doing CPM math this year. • Some clerical supplies will be available, and a list will be shown to you in class.

  7. Arriving and Leaving School Grounds • Buildings will be open at 7:30 AM. • Buildings will be closing at 3:30 PM. • You must stay on campus during 7:30am to 2:50 pm each day. • Classes start at 7:50 AM. Be on time!

  8. Math • We will cover basic 6th grade math. • You will learn about numbers, fractions, word problems, etc. • Make sure to bring plenty of paper and a sharpened pencil.

  9. Science and Health • We will explore Earth Science with things like rocks, volcanoes, weather, and ecology. • In Health, we will look at all the things that can keep you healthy and strong. • We will also explore drugs and alcohol in a special class.

  10. Attendance • You must attend classes from 12 August 2014 to 4 June 2015. • Bring a note to attendance office if you are absent. • There is a one week Thanksgiving break and three week Christmas break. No School on Labor Day.

  11. Tardiness • Tardiness disrupts the class. • Be on time every day. • Your grade made be lowered for absences and tardiness.

  12. Visitors • Students can not bring any visitors to school. • Visitor permits are only for your parents. • No outside friends, family, or animals are allowed in classrooms.

  13. Bicycles • Bicycles are to be locked in the bicycle racks only. • Skateboards should be checked in to the summer school office before school starts. • Bicycles and skateboards are not to be ridden on campus.

  14. Meal Service • The cafeteria will be open for students during lunch. • Each morning you will have Breakfast in Class through the BIC program. • Two students will get the breakfast carts and you eat in your Homeroom. • There is a small 10 minute break.

  15. Student Store • The student store is located near the cafeteria. • You can visit the student store this school year to get your school supplies and school uniforms. • Lost and found will be located in the main school office.

  16. Clean Campus • Each student must keep our campus clean. • Please clean your area after you finish eating. • Put all litter in the trash cans. • Make sure you keep your classroom clean and straighten the chairs and desks. • Students that break the rules may be placed on campus beautification by the Dean. • This means pick up trash and garbage!!!

  17. Dress Code • We follow the LAUSD dress code. • Use common sense and dress for success. • No hats, beanies, baggy pants, revealing clothing, religious cross, lettered buckles, or team sport shirts with numbers or logos. • Shirts must have sleeves and shorts may not be shorter than two inches above the knee. • No headphones or ear plugs or ear buds.

  18. Electronic Devices • Students may not have iPODs, MP3, games, etc…out during school hours. • All cell phones must be turned off and out of sight. They can be taken from you and your parents pick them up! • Be respectful and safeguard school computers and technology.

  19. Your Grades • Students will be receiving grades of pass or not pass. (A, B, C, D, or F) • Cooperation and work habits marks will be also assessed. • E – excellent • S – satisfactory • U - unsatisfactory
