Compost vs. Soil Jillie Galasso & Emily Braddock Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School Advanced 7th period, 6th grade Mr. Pham 2010
Introduction Background Information: • Compost is an over layer, not a soil. • 20-33% of potting soil is compost • The green beans should be in sun and watered everyday Hypothesis: • Our hypothesis is if you grow green beans in soil it will grow faster then green beans in compost.
Introduction (continued) Controlled variables: • Amount of soil/compost • Amount of water • Plants • Same environment Experimental variables: • Soil • Compost
Materials Soil • Two green bean seeds • 118.3 cc of soil • 118.3 cc of compost • 59.15 cc of water for each • 2 pots Compost Pot Water Green Beans
Procedure • Pour compost into 1 of the pots • Pour soil into 1 the pots • Stick a finger in each pot to make a hole • Open the bag of green bean seeds • Put two seeds in each hole • Cover the seeds with soil for the pot with soil in it • Cover the seeds with compost for the pot with compost in them
Data Analysis • We took 2 pots, one with soil and one with compost. 2 seeds in each pot to grow. • We watered it every day, and it grew! Patterns: • Compost: grew 1.5” every other day. Then on the last day it grew 11.5”. • Soil: it grew 8” every other day. Observation: • We had it at Emily's house for most of the time, then Jillie took it to her house the compost grew 3 times more than at Emily's house.
Conclusion Our hypothesis was correct! If we grew the compost before we grew the soil maybe it would have grown better. We have discovered that people should not use compost as potting soil for green beans.
