Topic: gustar, interesar, aburrir Essential question: How do I say what I like and what interests/bores me?
Gustar – a different kind of verb • Gustar is an interesting verb. We use it to say what we like. However, it is backwards in its Spanish form because it literally translates to “it is pleasing to me” • So instead of saying “Yo gusto” to say I like (like you do “yocomo/bailo/estudio” for all other verbs you know), you do this: • “Me gusta” = I like • “Tegusta” = you like
Gustar • You can use gustar to say things you like • Me gusta el béisbol. • Me gustan los deportes. (Notice that it is GUSTAN when there are plural things) • No me gusta la tarea • No me gustan los exámenes • You can use gustar to say what you like to do • Me gustaestudiar • No me gustacorrer • You NEVER use GUSTAN with verbs
Gustar • You can ask whether someone likes something • ¿Tegusta el fútbol? • ¿Tegustan los deportes? • You can ask whether someone likes to do something • ¿Tegustahablarespañol? • You can ask what someone likes • ¿Qué (no) tegusta? • ¿Quédeportes (no) tegustan? • ¿Quéclase (no) tegusta? • You can ask what someone likes to do • ¿Qué (no) tegustahacer?
Gustar • Short responses: • ¿Tegusta el baloncesto? A mí, ¡sí! (yes I do) • ¿Tegusta la tarea? A mí, ¡no! (no I don’t) • Me gusta la clase. ¿y a ti? (do you?) • Me gusta la clase. ¿y a ti? A mítambién. (I do, too) • Me gusta la clase. ¿y a ti? A mí, no. (I don’t) • No me gusta la clase. ¿y a ti? A mítampoco. (I don’t either)
Try it… • Write in Spanish 2 things you like and 2 you don’t like. • Ask you pareja what he/she likes/dislikes • The teacher will ask some of you
Pausa • Share 6 important details with your pareja • Write 5 questions on the left side and mark the answers
Interesar and aburrir • These work the same way as gustar • You can use them to say things that interest/bore you • Me interesa el béisbol. • Me aburren los deportes. (Notice that it is aburren when there are plural things) • No me interesa la tarea • No me aburren los exámenes • You can use them to say what activities interest/bore you • Me interesaestudiar • No me aburrecorrer • You NEVER use INTERESAN/ABURREN with verbs
Interesar and aburrir • You can ask whether something interests/bores someone • ¿Teinteresa el fútbol? • ¿Teaburren los deportes? • You can ask whether an activity bores/interests someone • ¿Teinteresahablarespañol? • You can ask what bores or interests someone • ¿Qué (no) teinteresa? • ¿Quédeportes (no) teaburren? • ¿Quéclase (no) teaburre? • You can ask what activity bores or interests someone • ¿Qué (no) teinteresa/aburrehacer?
Short responses • They are all the same as with gustar.
Try it • Write two things that interest you and two things that bore you. • Ask your pareja • The class will share
Pausa • Share 6 important details with your pareja • Write 5 questions on the left side and mark the answers
Don’t forget your summary • What did you learn? • What was important? • How does this relate to things you already know? • What was easiest? • What appears to be most challenging?
Vamos a practicar • Write 5 sentences with gustar, 5 with interesar and 5 with aburrir. • Translate them.
