Inform & get approval from institutional legislative affairs official. • Know the protocol. • Establish good staff interactions. • Acknowledge previous support and involvement; give credit and provide opportunities for publicity and positive exposure. • Build long term relationships; don’t contact only when you want something! • Establish credibility; provide supporting data. • Be a good listener. • Use testimonials from constituents, success stories; provide “coalition support” from private sector, public entities etc – broad support important.
