Education, Our Own Work John Todd
How is the human mind described and why should it be trained? • The human mind is described as “the brightest display of the power and skill of the Infinite Mind with which we are acquainted,” and it should be trained so that we can do our best in everything in this life and be prepared for eternity as well.
What is a real genius? • He is one who has the quality of patience while he actively uses his mind to research and apply the things he learns.
What is more important than just having a good mind? • A good mind is not as important as using hard labor and toil to acquire knowledge. The applying of our minds to learning and educating ourselves must be our own work.
What is more important than just having a good mind? • Thomas Edison once said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” • According to Sydney Smith true genius requires much hard work to develop fully. Often what is considered genius is mostly the result of labor and faithfulness in the pursuit of knowledge (“Pleasures of Knowledge”).
Calvin Coolidge • Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent.
What should the object of education be? • The object of education should be to discipline the mind and to make it suitable for future acquisition and usefulness. A disciplined mind becomes an efficient, useful servant.
What should the object of education be? • A Dr. A. Rogers once said, “A redeemed and educated mind and a surrendered will is an awesome tool in the hand of God.”
What should the object of education be? • 1 Ch. 28:9 says: “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
