Steven Spielberg • Jaws • Close Encounters of the Third Kind • Indiana Jones series • E.T. • Hook • Schindler’s List • Saving Private Ryan • Minority Report • Catch Me If You Can • War of the Worlds • Interview Clip
Jurassic Park • Based on a novel by Michael Crichton (acclaimed science fiction writer, creator of TV show “E.R.”) • Made $357 million upon release • Winner of 3 Academy Awards (visual effects, sound and sound editing) • #35 AFI “Most Thrilling Movies” list
Special Effects • First major motion picture to feature heavy use of CG (computer-generated) special effects - shots of large dinosaurs, herds, etc. • Spielberg was going to use a form of stop motion animation, but was so impressed by the computer animation that he cancelled his plans for stop-motion • Led to the use of CG in later movies like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars prequels • Spielberg showed the digital tests to Ray Harryhausen - Ray’s response: “That’s the future.”
Special Effects • Animatronics - moving robots covered in rubber, controlled by an operator • Previously used for the shark in Jaws, some of the Gremlins and on the rides at Disney World • Used in JP for close up shots many of the dinosaurs
Jurassic Park Observations • Observations on 4 types of dinosaur that appear prominently in the movie • Take the same kinds of notes as before - describe the animals and try to answer the question “why is it a monster?” • Try to pick out which scenes use CG and which shots use animatronics. Are there any stop motion effects or marionettes in this movie?
Post Screening • Of the 2:06 run time, dinosaurs are on screen for only about 15 minutes. Roughly 6 minutes of that time is CGI, 9 minutes are animatronic models • Original ending had the raptors impaled and crushed by the T-Rex skeleton in the visitor center
Post Screening • T-Rex roar: dog, penguin, tiger, alligator and elephant sounds • Raptor calls: walrus, dolphin and seals • Dilophosaurus: monkeys, hawks, rattlesnakes, swans
Post Screening • Production was delayed when the location in Hawaii was directly hit by a hurricane. The film crew helped in the cleanup process. • A deleted scene shot but cut from the film had the children riding a baby triceratops
