Qing Dynasty1644-1912 • The Dynasty was based on Confucian ideas of social order, harmony, and good government. Family, respect for elders and tradition are all to be guiding principles of Chinese society. (less focus on the individual than western thought.) • Led by a small group from Northern China called the Manchu, the Qing dynasty would create class tensions that would lead to discontent and rebellion. • A series of rebellions, natural disasters, and defeats in wars against European powers gravely weakened the Qing during the nineteenth century
Opium Wars 1st 1839-18442nd 1856-1860 • China had restricted western trade to a few coastal ports which did not satisfy European demand. • The British were importing large amounts of opium into China. • The Qing Dynasty moved to stop all opium imports and trade with the west which led to the British sending troops and to conquer coastal regions so as to open up trade.
Taiping Rebellion 1850-1864 • A civil war between the Taiping rebels led by Hong Xiuquan and the Qing dynasty which was supported by French and British forces. • The rebellion started because of popular discontent over economic problems, and the dislike of the ruling elite of the Qing Dynasty known as the Manchu.
Navel Battle on Yangtze River -The rebellion would be crushed by 1864 leaving millions dead however this event would motivate and influence later rebellion and revolution that was successful. -The Taiping philosophy was based in communal ownership and social equality similar to the communist ideas that would take hold nearly a century later.
The Boxer Rebellion 1900 • Boxer was the name given to a secret organization called the Society of Harmonious Fists. • Upset at the foreign takeover of Chinese land and Christian missionaries who threatened Chinese tradition. • Boxers roamed the countryside killing foreigners and Christians.

Foreign Response to Rebellion • In response to the Rebellion and killings an allied army of 20,000 British, French, German, Russian, American, and Japanese troops. • They attacked Beijing and crushed the uprising • The Chinese were forced to pay reparations. -Boxers were executed in mass.
