Online Catalogue Allows you to search for all kinds of library materials such as books, journals, AV materials, etc. • Searchbooksby Title, Author, Subject, Keyword (from Title or Author, Subject) e.g. Wordsworth, William, 1955. Wordsworth’s poems London : Dent & Sons • Search journalsby Title, Subject, Keyword (of Title, Subject) e.g. Discourse studies http://www.library.ln.edu.hk

Electronic Databases Types • Citation Databases- contains descriptive information (citation and subject headings) for publications, such as books, periodical articles, & government documents, etc. e.g. LLBA, MLA • Full-text Databases- contains the partial or complete text of works, such as articles, books, poems, and essays. e.g. JSTOR, Project Muse, ProQuest, Ebscohost How to search a book chapter or a journal article ?? e.g. Wordsworth, William, 1955.“Introduction” in Wordsworth’s poemsLondon : Dent & Sons

  10. How to construct a search Steps to construct a search • Identify main concepts: • Author ? A particular work? Content of the work? Criticism of a particular work? • Main concepts can be the name of an author or key word from a particular work • Choice of search words • Related key terms / synonyms e.g. Austen (Jane); literary criticism or literary interpretation; Hong Kong: hongkong, hk

How to construct a search • Search Command (1) • AND Searches records that mention both search terms, this narrows the search • e.g. Austen and pride • OR Finds records in which one or both search terms appear, this broadens the search • e.g. Austen or pride • NOT finds records in which search term after NOT does not appear, this narrows the search • e.g. Austen not pride

Search command (2) • Truncation: retrieves all variant endings of that word • LLBA: * • LexisNexis Academic: ! • OPAC / Library Online Catalogue: * • e.g. styl* -- retrieves all words that start with styl such as style, styles, stylistics etc. • ( )Parentheses: gives priority and order in the search statement • e.g. (fiction or novel) and Austen • Search Statement • Construct a search statement with terms you want to search on and use the appropriate search command(s) • e.g. (fiction or novel) and Austen

Answer: Conduct a keyword search in 1-Search. Tips: • The Boolean Operators AND, OR and NOT must be written in ALL CAPS. • Words in a specific order use " ". e.g. “business english"
