  1. The Model Web approach: a push-pull component for the science-policy interface? Stefano nativi, paolomazzetti, garygeller CNR-IIA ESSI-lab, NASA JPL August 2012 stefano.nativi@cnr.it

  2. ? How will CC affect infection rate of dengue fever in Vietnam? What if… ? Socioeconomic Fossil Fuel Use Model Data Observational Data (environment & vector distribution) Regional Climate Model Global Climate Model Data Data Data Vector Niche Model Deforestation/ Disturbance Model Infection Rate Model Data Human Population Density and Distribution Model Infection Rates

  3. ? How will CC affect infection rate of dengue fever in Vietnam? Elements … ? Data Model Business Process Link/Interface

  4. General Use Case • Define and run a Business Process to answer to “What if..” • A • B • C • D • Create or Edit an abstract BP • Compile the abstract BP • Return the output to the User • Execute the BP USER BP Brokers WF engine BP editor Middleware

  5. ? How will CC affect infection rate of dengue fever in Vietnam? Elements … ? Data Model Business Process Link/Interface Vocabularies Knowledge Base

  6. Knowledge bases • URR is a knowledge base • Application = BP (with User’s feedbacks) • Lexicon = Vocabulary

  7. UncertWebBp Broker URR BP Editor WF engine BP library Resources Brokering framework BP Broker Component library Controller Preprocessor

  8. ConclusioNs • The Model Web aims to support the science of tomorrow building an ecosystemofinteractingmodels and facing the relatedchallenges (i.e. multidisciplinarity, scalability, etc.). • In the Model Web users focus on high-levelrepresentations (i.e. abstract Business Processes); lowerleveldetails are in charge of the middleware. • Building meaningfulmultidisciplinaryBPsrequiresknowledgebasessupporting the interaction with and between Science and Policy components • The GEO URR can provide the knowledge (applications/BPs, lexicon/vocabularies) required to implement the GEO Model Web vision.
