  2. What is truth? • To understand how we know, we have to identify what is a “truth” • There are 3 types of Truth • Correspondence theory of truth • Coherence theory of truth • Pragmatic theory of truth

Correspondence theory of truth • Now ask “what is reality?” • Senses can deceive us so what is reality really like? • We must assume reality really exists and is not simply a product of our mind • This theory states that a statement (a proposition) is true if it corresponds to (reflects) reality. • “It is raining” (proposition), this is true only if it is raining outside (reality)

Coherence theory of truth • 3 observations fit: • I hear it • 2nd person hears it • Missing pencil • According to coherence theory, the proposition “the pencil hit the ground” is true • (did it really hit the ground, or is there another explanation?) • States a statement (a proposition) is true if consistent with other things considered true (and don’t contradict it) • A pencil falls, I hear it, a 2nd person hears it, it is now gone from table but I saw it a moment ago.

  5. Pragmatic theory of truth • Person B believes money is of minor importance • They believe friends are the most useful thing • This is truth for person B and it guides their actions • Something is true if it is useful • Whether or not it reflects reality is minor in importance • Person A believes earning money is most important thing • Their actions are guided by this belief

Some theories are absolute (correspondence) and some are relative (pragmatic), which one are you? • Does Coherence theory view truth more absolute or relative? • How are these theories different/similar to scientific theories? • What is good about seeking truth, what is bad about finding it?
