STEAM • This school year, we are doing an interdisciplinary exploration of Cuba through STEAM. • Late October, early November- a mini STEAM Summit • Robin received a Donors Choose grant funded for $2500 by Advancement Courses to do the following in our MS. • 7th grade: Show students scale models of 1950's and present day cars. Present facts on mass and fuel economy. Have students design experiments related to Newton's 2nd law of motion, specifically focusing on the amount of force needed to move various mass cars. Students will then use knowledge to design their own cars. • 8th grade: Construct and compare terrariums using concept of biodiversity. Students will design landscaping of terrarium using research of Cuba's ecosystems. Students will track and compare soil quality of terrariums. Students will also use terrariums as references throughout year (i.e., distinguishing biotic and abiotic factors; plant vs. animal cells; carbon cycle; photosynthesis, etc.) • Dayana’s Dancers will be performing to a song from Wynton Marsalis’ LIVE IN CUBA • This is only a small part of the overall school-wide yearlong effort for our students to explore themes and content of Cuba's Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, Commerce, Geography, Politics, etc. • Sticks 'n Skins is returning to us in June to round out the year. With luck, one of the panelists and performers will include Grammy award-winning Cuban Percussionist Pedrito Martinez .
