Consequences of Dropping Out • Real lifetime earnings differences without postsecondary education have declined considerably over the past 30 years especially for male dropouts. • The lifetime earnings gaps between dropouts and high school graduates are $400,000-$450,000 for all and about $550,000 for males. • The lifetime earnings difference between a dropout and a college graduate is $1.5 million.
Consequences of Dropping Out • Declining wages for dropouts are accompanied by steep declines in marriage rates • More than 40% of families living in poverty are headed by an adult without a high school diploma • Over their working lives, high school graduates will contribute between $300,000-$400,000 more in tax dollars than dropouts.
The Challenges that Lie Ahead • Increasing the number of high quality, rigorous pathways that prepare students for the future. • Improving the transition from middle to high school and high school to college • Informing students about the consequences of dropping out • Recovering students who have dropped out
