Wh- Questions (Asking for Information) (pg. 17) • WHO: Asks about PEOPLE. Who is your best friend? Who is visiting your parents? • WHAT: Asks about THINGS. What is in your backpack? What are “Munchkins”? • WHEN: Asks about TIME. When is the basketball game? When do you go? • WHERE: Asks about PLACES. Where is your class? Where does he come from? • WHY: Asks for a REASON. Why is she sad? Why do you always come late? • HOW: Asks for a DESCRIPTION • (in what way/ adj. / adv. of MANNER). How is your mother? How does she dance?
Wh- Questions: Adverbs Where: Replaces an ADVERB OF PLACE (a word, a phrase, or a dependent clause). To make a question with Where-…? 1. Replace the adverb (word, phrase, or clause) with “where.” 2. Invert is/are sentences to change them into questions. For PRESENT PROGRESSIVE OR NON-is/are sentences, change the sentence into a question by adding the helping verb do/does and inverting the subject & do/does. Put Where- first. (.?) Is/Are: The dog is here. The book is on the desk. Pres. Prog.: He is running on the street. NON-is/are:She studies in the library.
