Definitions • Figures of speech – A word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of something else and is not meant to be taken literally • Metaphor – A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without the use of such specific words of comparison such as like or as. • Symbolism – A literary movement that originated in late – nineteenth century France, in which writers rearranged the world of appearances in order to reveal a more truthful version of reality • Sound Effects – The use of sounds to create specific literary effects.
