  2. - Figures of speech. Definition: any expressive use of language. Example: I saw a row of twenty beams; -poet: oliverwendellholmes. It’s a expression of language.

  3. - Metaphor. Definition: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another. Example: A hero is no braver than an ordinary man. By: Ralph Waldo Emerson They are comparing a hero to an ordinary man.

  4. - Symbolism. Definition: The practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects. Example: But the Raven still beguiling my sad fancy into smiling The raven by Edgar Allen Poe. He uses the bird as a symbol of someone special.

  5. - rhythm. Definition: movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like. Example: I When to the common rest that crowns our days, Called in the noon of life, the good man goes, Or full of years, and ripe in wisdom, lays His silver temples in their last repose; THE AGES by William Cullen Bryant It has a rhythm to it.

  6. - Rhyme. Definition: identity in sound of some part, esp. the end, of words or lines of verse. Example: With the falling of the snow,    With the cawing of the crow,    Once again the fields we mow  -aftermath by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The ow sound is all the same for the ending words.

  7. - meter. Definition: poetic measure; arrangement of words in regularly measured, patterned, or rhythmic lines or verses. Example: Ah! what is not a dream by dayTo him whose eyes are castOn things around him with a rayTurned back upon the past? A dream by Edgar Allen Poe. They are in a pattern line one with line three and line two with line four.

  8. - alliteration. Definition: The repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables.   9. - onomatopoeia. Definition: words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. Example: not dulled them The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe The word dulled describes itself.

  10. - assonance. Definition: resemblance of sounds. Example: In visions of the dark nightI have dreamed of joy departed-But a waking dream of life and lightHath left me broken-hearted. A Dream by: Edgar Allen Poe They all sound alike. Night with light & departed & hearted.

  11. - Consonance. Definition: The repetition of consonants or of a consonant pattern, especially at the ends of words. Example: With the falling of the snow,    With the cawing of the crow,    Once again the fields we mow  -aftermath by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. . The ending words all end in ow.
