International Initiatives • Europe • Established ACM Europe as a legal entity within the EU • First European Computing Research Congress (ECRC) held in May in Paris • Issued report on secondary computing education in Europe • Engaging research funding issues/policy at the EU level • India • Legal entity within India with ACM India Council elected by ACM Indian members • Education initiative • Taking a CRA-like role for India
International Initiatives • China • MOU with China Computer Federation (CCF) extended • Rebuilt the ACM China Council • Held a meeting of the full ACM China Council in Changsha • Building agenda for chapters, education, publication, awards • Soon will start monthly translation of CACM to Chinese • Five articles per month • High quality translation • First pass: contractors • Second pass: ACM China CACM Editorial Board domain experts • MOE may invest in this effort • Acknowledge CACM as a legitimate publication in China • Contribute to raising awareness of the Chinese version of CACM

Origins • Original motivation • Open access movement and the challenges/threats posed to the ACM publishing program (and business) • Getting in front of publishing trends • But there are major challenges to multiple dimensions of ACM • Membership • Technical communities (SIGs) and conferences • Publishing/DL • The models that underpin all of the above
Structure • Question to be answered: • How must ACM restructure its portfolio of core activities, and the business models that support them, to stay relevant and viable in the future? • Approach: • Unpack and understand the core activities and business model(s) surrounding: Membership; Conferences; Publications • Understand the challenges and forces at play for each area and related model • Assess the strengths/weaknesses of each model relative to emerging challenges and risks • Explore new thinking for a very interconnected set of (current and future) core activities and the business models to underpin them
